Philippians 1:1-2 – Edd Eason
I’ve visited a few people who were in prison. Trying to talk through a thick piece of glass reminds you of just how desperate their situation really is. They can’t touch you. You can’t touch them. You try to smile and nor your head, but you feel helpless and inadequate. You avoid certain questions, such as “So, how long are you in for?” You try to be positive, but the reality of the glass is there to remind you just how isolated your friend really is.
Writing letters back and forth seems to be better. The glass is gone. There is more time for reflection. Words written can be read over and over again. Responses can be pondered. Thoughts examined. The situation analyzed. Emotions explored. Hope, even a little joy, can be mustered in the midst of an on-going letter writing/letter reading campaign.
We will soon enter our 12-week study of Philippians. Imagine yourself a prisoner, receiving regularly visits from a young friend who delivers letters back and forth between you and your friends. Friends who are praying for you. Who long to hear every word you have to say. Friends who love you. Friends who don’t turn and run when bad things happen.
They share one important thing in common with you. They, like you, want to be humble servants of Jesus Christ. They want to know about the hope and the joy you have. After all you have been through, how in heaven’s name can you be hopeful and joyful? What’s your secret?
So, here we go. Twelve weeks ahead. Twelve weeks to discover the joy that comes through being a true servant of Jesus Christ. Paul’s letter to the Philippians will be read and discussed each Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. Come join us as we get to know a prisoner who in the midst of suffering has discovered how to shine like a star. |
